There's no reason why it should be a problem. In a Series without free wheeling hubs, the whole lot spins constantly anyway (driven by the front road wheels) back to the dog clutch. The only difference is that it's not connected to the rest of the transfer box.
Remember reading about a Series in North Africa that ran 900 miles on the front drive until a half shaft could be located.
