Strange sounds from Disco steering

Feb 02, 2004 4 Replies

Hi all,

I have a 1993 Disco 1 which has developed strange clicking and banging from the steering.

With normal local runs there is a clicking sound from the front wheels as the steering is turned. If I go on a long motorway run all is fine until I get back onto ordinary roads. The clicking becomes an alarming knocking which can be felt through the floor.

Can anyone point me in the right direction with this?

Thanks in advance.

Front C/V joints. Get them checked out sooner rather than later - just in case I'm right!!

Kev,

Is this a single click when you steer, or a series of clicks? If it's a single click, in a vehicle of that age it sounds like it could be bushes.

Or it could be a wheel bearing - mine did that once and the wheel nearly came off - IIWY I'd check this right now before you drive it anywhere!

Jack the wheels up one at a time and waggle the wheel up and down by hand, holding it top and bottom. If there's any play there, get it done before you drive it anywhere.

Thanks all for the advice. Disco booked in for repair :o)
