TD5 Clutch Pedal

A mate of mine has bought a 2005 Defender and is struggling with the clutch bite point - it is so low that occasionally it isn't possible to engage first or reverse gear even with the "pedal on the metal" Is it possible to adjust the pedal travel? or does spell a component relacement?

Thanks for any help, Happy New Year to everyone

Before doing anything drastic check that the pedal is returning fully. It should not be possible to raise the pedal further from the rest position. Is the pedal return spring intact?

If the pedal does not return fully, fluid cannot flow from the reservoir to refill the pipework resulting in less than a full effective stroke. Raising the pedal with the driver's toe may give a short term fix.

Read past discussion on this group: this subject has been raised before. You may end up changing the slave cylinder.

And the basics, check the fluid level. When the master cyliner goes generally it runs down the pedal itself in to the footwell. Check if its damp.

Cheers guys

We'd gone through the basics, including a complete fluid change and bleed but the return position of the pedal is something we haven't looked at
