My sister is married to a Kiwi - they lived over there for a year and absolutely loved it. She's just spent a month there over Christmas and says it is superb, she says one day you can be on the beach and the next in the mountains - it's got pretty much everything. Why they ever bothered coming back is totally beyond me - they both had great jobs over there and a great house. Now they live in a small flat in Edinburgh working their arses off struggling to pay the bills. Wouldn't be surprised if they end up back over there some time soon.

We had friends who emigrated there, but came back after five years. "Low cost of living", sure, but very poor salaries to go with it, and a long way from family when they had kids.

If you're not into the outdoors in a very big way, I got the impression it wasn't for you.

I think that's the only reason they came back (family ties) - as you point out, it's a long way to get back. It's not like being here in France where I could get back within a few hours if necessary. I still wouldn't be surprised to see them go back sooner or later tho.

They are very much into walking etc. etc. At any and every opportunity they are out walking somewhere or other or doing some sort of outdoor activity. That's actually one of the reasons they went to Scotland after coming back.
