swivel bearings worn / in need of adjustment one of 6 track rod ends...or 6 of 6 worn ones! poorly adjusted steering box tyre pressure wheel missing ;-) just the difference between a normal car and a Landrover.

or a mixture of all of the above...

swivel bearings are favorite though.

You don't mention steering rack worn out..... which I assume would be very expensive.

How expensive are the swivel bearings or track rod ends to have replaced?

I had real problems with this and change a lot of things, changing the Steering Damper really helped..

However, after 35k miles found out it was the doughnut joint on the steering - get it checked.

Your story is reminiscent of my first D90. It wandered so badly, I asked the seller to drive it back after the test drive! (Though I did later drive it home 120 miles with due caution. Turned out to be a cracking vehicle after various teakings and adjustments).

The good news is that I fixed all the above myself very cheaply. I think any reasably competent DIY mechanic should be able to do the same as most of the costs are labour -- and a workshop manual.

But why not get a qualified mechanic to look it over?

steering box, about 160 quid exchange, plus fitting, ISTR.

TREs are about 5 quid a pop and can be a piece of piss or an hour's work to get undone. Shouldn't be too bad on a disco. The balljoint on the drop arm is either another TRE or a rebuildable joint.

not so easy but still a diy job with the right gear.
