The housing is aluminium alloy and seems to be somehow cast around the bearings from what I could see on my 200tdi 90, was going to replace with a kenlowe or similar but had so many people tell me to stick with an original viscous unit (I believe the thinking is that a viscous unit when failed locks up results in overcooling but an electric fan just packs up allowing the ali head to overheat & warp). I managed to source a new viscous unit for £50 inc vat in the end from a friend who deals in Land Rover parts, let me know if you want his contact details.

In my experience, when a viscous coupling fails (loss of 'goo' inside), it doesn't lock up any more. Damaged my Peugeot 604 that way- but that's another story

that would be a great price over here in Oz- they cost $450AUD new
