Vauxhall Vectra - whistling at idle - timing belt on way out?

Hi

I have a 51 (2002) plate Vectra 1598cc Ecotech petrol. Noticed this morning when the engine is idling that there is a 'whilstling' noise occuring. Engine performance seems normal. Does anyone think this could be the timing belt on the way out? I know that they are due to be changed at around 60K, which mine is approaching.

I think you will find cam belt changes are due much more frequently than that. If you have *any* doubts about the belt, tensioner or water pump, my advice would be to not drive it until you get it checked out!

Replacement interval is 40k (originally they were 80k, but got dropped to

60k for a short period, before finally being dropped to 40k) Whistling sound at idle could very well be a pulley bearing on the way out, but without seeing it, it is hard to say. Best to get it checked ASAP.

No, change intervals are now 40k and have been for some time.

Have the belt cover off immediately and check the belt / tensioners / bearings. If you find any problem, do not drive the car, and have the garage replace the lot. Vx do a kit.

Belt breakage due to failed bearings / shattered rollers is still very common.
