1995 LS400 - replaced steering rack but problem is back

Hi,

I own a 1995 Lexus LS400 with approximately 90k miles. Last November I started to notice a humming sound when turning at slow speeds. I took the car in and they recommended replacing the steering rack because it was leaking fluid. After the work was done the humming was gone. A couple of weeks ago (4 months later) the problem started again. From reading this group it seems that the next step is going to be to replace the power steering pump. How much should I expect to pay for the repair? Is it possible that the first repair was unneccesary?

Thanks,

John

While a steering rack can leak ... it has no rotating parts. The hydraulic pump does have rotating parts that can produce humming/growling sounds.
