Antenna Replacement - '95 SC300

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to remove the old antenna mast?

Thanks for your input Ray O. I don't want to seem ungrateful, but the web site wasn't helpful. In fact these instructions can not be followed, since they are either self contradictory or they leave out enough steps to make them useless.

The web site you refered me to said, "These instructions work only if power antenna motor runs when car stereo is turned on/off. See guide below for applications and ordering new antenna mast."

My antenna does go up when I turn the radio on and it goes down when I turn the radio off.

In the fourth picture on that web site, it simply says to turn the radio on and remove the antenna. Here is the exact text included with the picture. "1) Turn car stereo on and remove antenna mast. Turn off ignition."

When I turn the radio on (after removing the antenna nut, the antenna goes up and stops. It does not release the antenna and I can not pull it out.

Then the instructions say to turn the ignition off.

Two pictures later after the instructions tell you to insert the new antenna, the instructions say to turn the radio off, but now the ignition is off and the radio will have gone off with the ignition.

OK, if the antenna does not come out with the locknut removed and then turning on the radio, then the next step is to have a helper turn on the radio while you stand by the antenna. As the antenna extends, grab the mast as close to the mounting point as you can and pull straight up when the antenna is almost fully extended but before the motor stops turning.

When you re-install the antenna, you will have to jiggle the drive cable until it catches on the drum and starts to wind in, being careful to get the mast aligned with the hole as soon as the cable catches. It will probably take several on-off cycles to get it to catch.

Thanks again. I already tried that. I had my wife turn on the radio while I pulled as hard as I could. We did this several times and it didn't help.

Previously I have replaced the mast on a '93 Camry and a '91 Celica. It would have been simple if the plastic cable had not been broken in both. Just like you said, Remove the cap, turn on the radio and out it comes. The Camry and Celica run the motor until the antenna stalls because it can not go any farther, I don't know if it senses the stall, or it just times out and shuts off power to the motor.

On another web site (Sorry I can't remember which one) I found some instructions that said Lexus radios manage the height of the antenna. It puts it higher for AM or FM and lower for the other. Then it said the procedure for removing the antenna was:

7) Release the AM and DISC buttons

9) Compare the length of the plastic gear/cable

13) If the length of the old and new cables is different, you must disassemble the motor to get the broken piece out.

I have tried this procedure and every part of it happens, up to step #6 when the antenna does not eject. The radio display does indeed display "AnT" just like step #5.
