18 yr old car insurance ?

Just a possibility to think about. Insure yourself on it and have her as a named driver? After a year they'll credit her with a no claim bonus if she doesn't shunt it.

My wife has been with Direct Line for a few years and has always had me as a named driver. I only shifted from driving company cars a couple of years ago so when they offered to credit me with 5 years no claims I jumped to them in the middle of an insurance year.

We did try that but they based the quote on the youngest driver so worked out more expensive.

Try Admiral or Elephant with the youngster as the main driver and you as a named driver. Their rating system gives a substantial discount for additional named drivers.

You'll probably get the best deal from one of the smaller insurance companies. Look at people like Firebond, Lancaster, CIS, Pete Best, Carole Nash (and further afield). And be prepared for a callback after an online quote - some of them try hard to get it down even further! Don't dive in and take a quote straightaway. I got an online quote from Firebond which wasn't that cheap, so I took Lancaster's quote. Firebond called me back later and undercut Lancaster by £80. Might not sound much, but the Lancaster price was only £180! (OK I'm older and drive a classic, but the principle still applies).

They're bloody useless - all the quotes had different excesses when I tried them. Obviously the "best" quote had a huge voluntary excess.

Heard bad things about Tesco's support after an accident, though - from a bloke that I work with, and another bloke that works at the same place who ran into the back of me. Pretty sure that even on fully comp. you don't get little niceties like hire cars whilst your car's being repaired etc.

Horses for courses, and (of course) the cheaper policies will have to cut corners somewhere. I do know, however, that I was glad to be on the receiving end of an accident and having legal cover et-all with Swinton (their legal cover kicks in before your actual insurance co. does - if its a clear-cut case) - compared to the poor lad who'd shopped at Tesco.

I've been with tescos for several years now. evey year I look and never find a cheaper quote. I do pay the extra for the temporary replacement car, legal expenses and no claims bonus protection as, yes, this is not included in the basic premium. However even with all the extras it is still cheap for me.

I've been in 2 accidents since I had tescos insurance. The first was some bugger who ran into the back of me. Tescos were helpful although unfortunately as I hadn't taken out the option for the temporary car on my insurance I would have been left without a car for 2 weeks so I had to go though a motorclaims company to deal with the claim and they provided me with a temporary car.

I then had another accident (my fault this time) where I reversed the car round a corner out of a parking spot at work and hit a low post on the left hand side with the wing of my car.. bummer quite a bit of damage. This time tescos had to deal with it, and it all went fairly smoothly except of course I was without a car for two weeks, so as soon as I got the car back I took out the extra cover... it was only about £20 a year or something.

So anyway my experience has been reasonably good but you do get the real basics unless you take out the options but this is true with any cheap insurer. my quotes are still cheap even after paying for all the extras. Be careful and ensure you check out the excesses also as a cheap quote may land you with a huge excess. My current excess is not that bad at all.
