A thought just struck...

Would I be right in thinking that if I'm insuring a second car I have to start all over again with the no claims bonus? In other words all the online quotes I've just got which include a squillion years no claims don't count?

P.S.

If I tell the online comparing pooters that I have no NCB they try to help by asking if I've been driving another car which I do not insure in my own name. I haven't; I insure another car in my own name, and have done without incident since 1988. Surely this can't be as difficult as it seems?

Many insurance companies will offer you a discount that matches your NCB on your main car however you'll not really get any quotes from online websites, rather ring around brokers. I used Chris Knott. Note that's discount and not an actual NCB. Also have a look at multicar policies.

Thanks, Conor. As you say the online quote machines can't cope with even moderately complicated stuff.

Some companies offer to 'mirror' your NCB which is just a fancy name for applying the same NCB to both cars. I had this for one year from Norwich Union but they made a mess of it when I sold the first car. They tried to say that I had no NCB because there was nothing to mirror. It took some time to sort things out.

I now use Saga - substantially cheaper and no problems.

Yes.

However the company I insured both cars with last year called me back a week after I insured the 2nd car and gave me back the £90 my 1st policy's 5 years no claims history was worth on the 2nd car.

Which was nice.

Multicar works for me. One car 7 year no claims 12000 miles/year £400.

2 cars, 2nd with 0 NCB, total 15000 miles / year between 2 cars £500 (cheaper than many quotes for single car). Now building up a 2nd NCB.

Some will include (part) of your existing NCB when insuring a second car. Discount for having a second car with the same company is common too.

best result I ever had was when I called to pay my premium and was told that it had already been paid. I kept quiet.

Yes, that is right, but there are a number of Ins. Cos that will match your current NCB on your '2nd' policy.

I had this a year ago with a MGF summer car. Wanted over a £1k first quote, got a NCB match, and it came down to ~£350. The good thing is, after a year, you keep the full NCB on that car, so can go anywhere with a full NCB for both cars. Alan.
