AC problem - Megane Scenic

OK. AirCon light comes on but it makes no difference. Checked the fuses and they seem OK.

Any ideas? I was thinking coolant level etc but can't even find the AC system under the bonnet ?

AC needs specialist equipment to check the gas levels. Strictly a garage job.

If the system has lost gas, chances are there is a pressure switch somewhere which is stopping the compressor engaging. No offence, but if you can't detect even one part of the a/c system(*), best leave the investigation to a garage.

(*) Compressor on engine block likely driven by a large belt, condensor mounted in front of the rad, extra cooling fans, pipework from compressor to condensor, probably a filter/reservoir, high/low pressure alloy pipework to bulkhead, etc etc.

More than likely short of gas and the low pressure switch has opened to protect the compressor, when did it last work?

I had this and they said it was the "pcb". They wanted £150 to fix it so I just left it and eventually sold the car.

By coolant, I'm guessing you mean the gas in the system. The aircon consists of a radiator along with the usual one and a pump that's usually driven off the engine like an alternator.

You can't top up the gas yourself so the only solution is to find someone (usually an air con specialist is best) who has a machine for draining the gas and lubricant out of the system, to check it is still in deep vacuum after whatever minutes, and then put in the correct amount of gas and lubricating oil, which is a critical balance.

If it's not the gas, they'll also advise on what's duff if they're any good.

Taking it to a Renault dealer would, I think, be a bit like going to Hampstead Heath, with your trousers and pants down, bending over and putting your wallet with all the money you can raise, stuck in the cleft, and then shouting "Yoo Hoo Boys, Come and Get Me!"
