I've still got one!! a 164 HA, no seatbelts and it will be tax exempt. I went to the garage to get it out the other week. All the tyres were flat, the hose connection had fallen off the water pump (alloy corrosion) the alternator and water pump were solid, the points had no connection through them, the SU fuel pump had died, the heater fan had seized and was still switched on (cue hot smell when I put a battery on)

The starter didn't want to fly out its little gear, but a good few spins got it going, some wd40 down the plug holes got the bores moving.

I had by then run out of light, so I haven't got it fired up again yet.

Amazing what happens after 20 years left idle in a damp garage.

I hope to drive it out of the garage next week, although I will trailer it home!

I had an HB for a year, and thought it one of the worst cars I had owned!

It was about four years old when I got it, with below average milage and a full service history. I treated it not unreasonably, but it popped its head gasket with no apparent reason. Dead easy to fix, but it was so slow and poor-handling when compared to its contemporaries. I couldn't wait to get shot of it!

As a replacement, I was offered an ex-company 1300 Avenger at a knock-down price by my employer. It was a much better car in every respect; I used it as a family car, and towed a camping trailer with it. I had it for six years, it never broke down, and cost peanuts to run. I eventually gave it away with 100K on the clock. The recipient got another two years out of it.

As it happens a Hillman Avenger was the first car I can remember my family having. I specifically remember being picked up from school in it on hot summer days.... of course we wore shorts to school in hot weather so when we climbed in the back the vinyl seats used to burn the backs of our legs.

My mate had an old Avenger at the same time I had my Mk2 Escort. It was tinfoil by comparison.

One day he couldn't start it so two of us got round the back to push on the boot and bumpstart it. Can you imagine the size of the holes left by two pairs of hands pushing right through the metal?
