Astra warning light on at 65 mph

Hi

My 98 Astra 2.0 DI has the engine electronics light coming on when hitting

65mph, normally when going up hill. Anyone have any experience of this? It will stay on until the key is removed, and wont come back until I hit 65 again. I can rev as hard as I like at standstill and its fine, and it doesnt matter what gear Im in. There are no actual running problems, just the light. On the off chance I took off a couple of sensors and gave them a clean but no joy. I've got it booked in soon for the codes to be read but I'd like a second opinion... first!

thanks

Very carefull check the oil level. Thats with the engine stone cold and after having sat for at least 6 hours.

Usually a spurious MIL lamp is low oil level causing poor lubrication of the vacuum pump and hence low vacuum. Various engine controls are vacuum operated and the slightest drop off in vacuum is noticed by the ecu which triggers the lamp.

If the oil level is fine- then your vacuum pump is on its way out- also fairly common due to long periods of poor lubrication- i.e. low oil level.

The oil level is ok... now. Cant say how well it was looked after before I bought it a month ago though. You may be on to something though I found an oil cap jammed down the bottom of the engine yesterday.

I took it in to have the codes read today but they say they couldnt get a code for it (just p0704 clutch switch input cicuit & p1635 glow device circuit general error). They want to do an hour of further testing. Im surprised though that they couldnt get any other codes, doesnt the fault light being on mean that there must be something? Im not even sure that they took it for a test drive because the mileage written on the Job Card shows no difference to when I picked it up -or do they write the mileage _after_ the work?.

How much would a vacuum pump be to fit, (I take it its not something I can do with my spanner set from argos!)

cheers
