Auto loves 1st gear

Hi. I have a honda accord 2ltr 96...less than 120k And it doesn't matter if the engine is cold or hot but I'm lucky if the box moves into 2nd gear before

2600 revs. Is this normal or fixable?

it should have had at least two oil changes by now and it must have genuine honda oil. auto boxes on this model are often trouble.

My BMW is reluctant to change up when cold and I was advised to change the auto box fluid. I don't know myself is this is a 'fix' but if I get round to doing it soon I'll report back here.

I shouldn't really answer but....

As you asked about an auto gearbox, what do you think Mrcheerful is referring to? Plus the fact that engine oil should be changed about every

6,000 miles (IIRC) it would have had far more than two by now wouldn't it???

I understand that the engine oil needs changing regularly and I had the honda's chamged son after I bought it about a year ago but someone led me to believe that transmission oil in an auto never needs changing.

The 5HP18 box stays in second gear much longer when cold than hot - to heat up the catalytic converter more quickly. I'd guess newer boxes do the same too.

Firstly have the auto box oil drained, flushed and refilled.

Secondly, it is normal for it to hold the gears longer when COLD as this promotes faster warmup and lower emissions. - there is a temp sensor in the box which, the signal of which you ought to check if it is no better after a fluid change.

What mileage has the car done???

It's a pretty expensive process trying to change the entire contents of an auto box, since the torque convertor contains a large quantity of fluid which doesn't drain out with the rest. Obviously if you refill, run and drain again some more will be changed. But to change it all costs.
