Awfull grinding nose

Hey all,

Anybody any ideas on where I should start looking in the morning on my Renault 19 1.9td for the following problem.

Driving home tonight, just pootling up the road at 30 in 4th and it starts making a funny knocking noise that was quite regular and seemed to increase/decrease in frequency with road speed.

Stop at doctors to pick up prescription, jump back in and in starts making a god awful grinding noise, it has done this ever since, only drove it home but noticed this..... When accelerating, it seems fine, when braking it seems fine, when holding a speed it kind of squeals, rumbles, grinds & thumps. It does those four things to varying amounts if you slow down without breaks.

Need ideas as I have a 20 mile commute and the train/busses round here are a nightmare.

if it stops when you apply the brakes it nees new pads. does it do when cornering etc?

>

It makes it worse when turning right, same or slightly better when turnign left. Wouldn't low pads be worse when applying the brakes, why would they go silent when using them?

required due to a sticky caliper.

Simon.

yeh so pretty much what I thought then, the other thing I though of would be the wheel bearings. The noise seems to be from the front passenger wheel and I suppose the noise being worse turning right this would be correct.

Do any of those thing suddenly go, I thought they slowly wore at just got worse and worse not seem perfect of second then completely shot the next?

Tim

The message from "Tim Anderson" contains these words:

Last time I had a set of pads go (on holiday - lots of hills, looked like plenty when we left - turned out not to be) it graunched more on turns and less when braking.

Never did make any sense of it - but pads it was.

I've had similar noises caused by a loose roadwheel - check all nuts are tight.

Someone give that man a prize!!!!!!

Two loose nuts on the passenger wheel :-o, not the question is, what can I do to help stop this in the future?

I am pretty sure this wasn't a malicious act as I had done 40 miles already that day.

Tim

Sounds like they were never tightenened properly. I've never known a wheel nut to come loose if it's tightened correctly. Who was the last person to fit the wheel? Mike.

once had stripped threads, hard to tell by looking but bolts ALWAYS kept coming loose, think a product is available callt lock tite

Wheel was last tighntened up over six months ago when I had a tyre changed sowould hope it was.......

Is that like the rubber glue stuff you get in purple tubes?

It's usually easy to tell if a thread is in danger of stripping.

but bolts ALWAYS kept

Loctite should _never_ be needed or used on wheel nuts/bolts. If the threads are damaged enough to cause the nuts to come loose, the studs or nuts, prefereably both should be replaced. Mike.

Loctite is made to suit many different applications, inc threadlocking, and it's supplied in red plastic bottles. Other manufacturers sell similar products, in bottles or tubes. Could be any colour. All are non sticky, Usually pastel coloured, and quite runny. Mike.

yes seen them on some but IIRC someone ill fitted wheel spacers.

I always thought there was a product on the market for wheel nuts. i agree tho

NEVER use threadlock on wheelnuts! Studs should be lightly oiled when fitting the wheel, then tightened to the specified torque. If you don't have a torque wrench, then tighten firmly using the supplied wheel nut wrench, without any sort of extension for leverage. The extra long wheel wrenches, and breaker bars etc should only be used to get nuts off that have been overtightened.

Make sure you very carefully examine the wheel and hub for damage, if you have run with the nuts loose, there is almost certain to be unacceptable wear on the spigot of the hub (the bit the wheel centre seats onto) and damage to the wheel centre and the cones where the nuts fit.

I do wonder, I can understand stripping the few threads on a nut but a whole bolt coming loose?

Tim

If you didn't do it yourself, there's no guarantee. It's usual to run all the nuts up, then finally torque them to the correct setting. Maybe the garage that did it, overlooked that final tightening. If the threads are still sound, I think you can be pretty sure they were never tightened up properly when the tyre was changed. My advice is that if you don't see them tighten the nuts. Check them yourself. It's a rule I follow myself.

A neigbour of mine had a back wheel fall off his caravanette some years ago. Picked it up after having a puncture repaired at a local garage. Took his wife and two children shopping about 10 miles away. Doing 50-60mph there and back. As he entered the village on his return, slowing to about 30mph, the wheel fell off. Finished up rolling down the road on the hub. Apparently the garage had only done them up finger tight, and forgotten to tighten them.

Another case. A mate of mine sold his very nice Golf GTi. A week later the guy tells him the car is a writeoff. Was doing 80mph on a m/way. A wheel fell off and the car rolled several times. Fortunately it didn't hit anything, and he clung on inside. Escaped with a few bruises. The wheel that fell off was one of two that had just had new tyres fitted. By a garage. Mike.

There were a few shavings on the wheel once I'd taken the trim off, these "seemed" to be from the bottom of the bolt head but I'll check tommorrow, It got me to work and back, thats all I can ask really, now I have a weekend to replace a possible dodgy wheel, hub and bolts.

Cheers all

Tim

See this is what I am frightened of most, I tend to keep good care of the car, but I have never checked the wheel bolts as I've never heard anything like it.

To think if this had have happened five mins earlier on the motorway, I might not have seen my baby's 1st birthday nor my next babies birth............................ (at least baby and preg wife would have been ok)

It is scary stuff, looking at the bolt, it looks fine but am going to have the bolts, wheel and discs/pads replaced just in case.

I presume the bolts go into the hub? should I replace that too???

Tim
