BMW 525i 24v auto 1991 gearbox problems

This would be the 5 speed? So I'm assuming it's 'slipping' on a change from 4 to 3? Does it then work normally when the gear actually engages?

The gearbox is not sealed. It simply hasn't a 'conventional' dipstick and filler tube. It does still need routine fluid changes, though. Check the handbook for details. ISTR every 24,000 miles.

Later models had so called lifetime fluid, but BMW now recommend a change at about 90,000 miles.

The box is a four speed I beleive. And yes when the gear does engage there are no problems. Sounds like a fluid change won't go a miss - does anyone know any decent garges in South London.

I thought the 5 speed came in with the 24 valve engine. If there's a '4' on the selector it's a five speed.

The loss of drive between gears and an accompanying thump isn't that unusual with these boxes and it can go on like that for years. My 525 certainly did.;-)
