Brake lights work even when no key in ignition......

That is very normal on every single post war car on the road as I am aware.

Yes, on some cars. My Volvos did that, however my pug 205 and my Cit ZX don't.

Depends on the car.

Funnily enough I only noticed this on my car (Chevy Caprice) only last week, having never noticed it on any of my other cars. I wasn't sure whether this was peculiar to Yanks or some artifact of my wiring alterations. Now I know!

On my SEAT IBIZA I noticed this when I first got the car and thought it was dodgy wiring! - all my other cars (mainly Fords) had to have the ignition turned on.

I don't know why some cars are made like this but others not but it must be some kind of safety feature maybe.

Which war? It's true for my Volvo 240, not true for any other car I've owned.

All the German ones do it, none of the English ones I've met do.

I've owned three postwar German cars. None of 'em did it. Mind you, they were all air-cooled.

With respect I meant post-war design.... - Air cooled VW's are not what I consider post-war...

English cars that do this Vauxhall, they all do it. VW's all do it. Volvo's All do it. I was under the impression SAAB's do I was also under the impression all fords do this. As for anything french or italian... - If you can ever get the electrical systems fully working properly then who gives a damn about the brake lights :)

Nope, some Fords don't, but older Renaults do.

It seems common on Japanese cars like my Nissan Primera but not so on my old fords and vauxhalls
