Can't remove drum on brakes!

Hi!

I'm having problems removing the outer drum on the brakes on my Mistubishi Lancer 1988 Stationwagon. The handbrake is OFF. Any ideas? Pictures here:

Hit it with a big hammer a few times. It'll fall off.

I'm not at all sure why women like men. We're argumentative, childish, unsociable and extremely unappealing naked. I'm quite grateful they do though.

Along with the back-plate, judging by the state of it!

I'm not familiar with the model, but it looks to me like one where you have to remove the cap in the centre and then remove a split pin, undo the nut in the centre, and then the drum will come off complete with hub.

If the drum is worn then the shoes get stuck against the unworn lip on this type of setup. You have to slacken off the adjuster a lot more than you think to get clearance. If you do it right it will literally fall off.

I don't know this car either but doesn't that risk pulling the wheel bearing with it!

Will the drum rotate at all? If not then try putting the wheel back on and turn it to and fro a few times. There will probably be a slack point somewhere. Remove the wheel at that point and try the drum again. You have of course removed the locking screw (if fitted) and the handbrake is off? :-) (car securerly choked so doesn't roll).
