car off road

Hi there,

Don't panic this isn't another SORN related thread!

I have just passed my driving test and I have on the drive my lovely Volvo that has been waiting for me. Its declared SORN and has been most of the year and has no MOT. It needs some work (handbrake cable, bit of rust on the arches) which I am going to get done. My question is - whats the procedure I need to follow? I can't tax it without an MOT, I can't MOT it without the work being done and I can't take it to the engineer without the first two. Its not worth having it transported as it would probably be cheaper to buy new so what are my legal options? Any advice would be great.

Thanks,

Pete

You can drive it to a pre-booked MOT test whilst it's SORNed, so if the mechanic is the MOT centre, you're sorted.

Otherwise, it's a trailer.

Not necessarily. He could take it for a pre-booked MOT, then to a repairer to get the failed items fixed. That would probably mean paying for two tests though. Except that if the arches didn't fail, the tester could probably fix the handbrake for no more than the cost of a second MOT test, making it cheaper just to let him do the work.

If it was me, I'd get one day/week insurance and take it to the mechanic's place. At the end of the day insurance is important for a huge number of reasons - road tax for 1 day is not that big a deal to most people.

Yeah - only insurance is often not valid unless you have valid tax and valid MOT.

But taking it to and from a pre-booked MOT is an exception.

Has anyone ever actually seen this in writing, particularly the bit about tax?

Well, when my car got written off by some numpty mummy reversing into it with her powerful little BMW my insurer wanted the MOT certificate before they would pay up. Actually, thinking about it they didn't have the tax disc, I sent that back to DVLA for a refund.

when i had a pr*tt pull out in front of my mondeo righting it off, the insurance company told me not to send the tax to them and to send it to dvla for a refund on the remaining months.

Thats comprehensive insurance. What we are talking about here is will they provide the legal minimum.

I phoned local cops about what I planned to do, and gave details of situation; had to take car to mechanics prior to MOT, then to a pre-booked MOT from mechanics garage. They said technically a trailer shoudl be used, but was told if i had all paperwork with me the police would not have issue with me doing the above. I also did this a year prior to this, where they were more thorough. They took my registration number, and I was actually stopped just to be told they had my registration number noted. They asked for mechanics address, confirmed I was on the right road to it, and that was it, offski.

The police aren't that bad, if you're careful on your way to a mechanic's garage you'll most likely be okay.

No MOT? That'd slash the value, so the payout...
