Carlton starting gremlins - Helppppp

Jan 17, 2005 5 Replies

Hi all,

I have a Carlton 2.0 auto Diplomat J plate (auto). The car is original with no strange engine mods. (120k on clock and in good order)

The car seems 'Reluctant' to start first time. It has always fired first time, but it now appears to turn over but not fire most times, ignition off and on and you can then normally catch it 2nd time but it need some some work on the accelerator pedal to get it. Third time on the start and its OK.

Just put new plugs in, and had new filters (fuel and air) a short while ago. Cars fluid levels (and their colour) all seem fine, and battery and alternator OK.

Its a bit of a mystery as the car has been great in catching and starting first time without a cought or fight with the accelerator pedal.

Any ideas as to what the problem is ??? The problem has slowly developed so not appear to of suddenly appeared as a result of 'Tinkering'

Thanks in advance,

Andy.

Fuel pump relay? this was always a favorite on these cars the coil wire goes and then you get an intermittent fault.

Sounds fuel presure type problem, fuel pump relay maybe?

keep well,

If it's not the fuel pump relay as others have suggested, then try cleaning the crankshaft sensor - it's held in by a

10mm bolt at the end of the engine block (forget which end, but it's got a thick-ish wire to it). Undo the bolt, pull it out, and the chances are it'll be quite dirty - a brown/black colour (as a result of carbon deposits at a guess) - get some emery paper and clean it up so it's a nice shiny silvery colour, put it back in, and watch the starting improve tremendously.

I did this on my Carlton when it refused to go at all, after having tried new plugs, leads dizzy cap, rotor arm, king lead, coil, another coil (in case that one was duff), and cleaning the crank sensor cured the problem straight away.

Just clean it with Scotchbrite and solvent. It's the iron particles which get stuck to it that cause intermittent or spurious triggering. (It's got a small cylindrical magnet inside it).

Where is the Fuel Pump Relay ??? There is one in the engine bay at the back by the bulkhead passenger side, but this says Fuel Injection System Relay and not Fuel Pump - or is it the one of the same thing as its the only one related to fuel???

With the car starting fine and first time once it has fired up, does this suggest anything else ???

Andy.
