Your diesel astra doesn't conform to the incoming rules for emissions, the froggy engines do.

To get Euro V compliance.

As it was, Euro IV caused a few problems, Euro V has added to them.

VAG cars have DPFs in some versions now (the 170BHP 2.0 TDI I think), and there are problems reported with those- mainly for cars used for short trip or town driving. I don't think it uses a seperate fluid, but injects fuel to heat the DPF for regeneration.

I'm pleased my Leon doesn't have one, even though my normal journey would probably keep it clear.

That was a constructive reply, albeit one which requires you to have a little think about the implications.

I know, in the Octavia, the DPF hasn't caused problems. In the Superb however it clogs quickly and Skoda refuse to accept it is a problem, and the cars get choked up.

The actual Eolys has been available on the "street" now for some time- it's resetting the DPF system that is the hard part.

At least 50% of the time you need to replace the DPF ECU, Eolys additive tank cap (it contains a non resettable level measuring device) and often the exhaust pressure sensor. It's prudent to wash out the DPF at that time to be sure its properly clean, so all in all, £500 is a typical minimum spend...

(then your DMF will probably break up!)

Strangely, the system used on the Ford's with the same engine doesnt involve eolys though, they use a dry system...

Can you just junk it all and fit a straight through pipe? It's obviously not needed for any MOT requirements at the moment.

I know this is not the same situation but years ago I junked the oxidation catalysts on my 306's with the turbo XUD engines. The local factors actually list the front pipe without the cat so the job took about 10 minutes.

No, but persuading the ECU that it's not there may be interesting.

I'll bet some bright spark can reprogram the ECU with a laptop in a few ticks?

Or if it's just pressure sensors then some resistances to substitute and provide a 'normal' signal maybe?

Theory is good. In practice......I think you would struggle. As the DPF ecu forms part of the ubquitous can-bus, you can't just removeit.

What we need is a custom little ecu that would plug in and make the right noises down the can-bus without actually measuring anything or needing to drive any actuators. Which is probably not that hard to do for the right person...

Then you could remove the dpf from the exhaust.

Yes I see, nothing is ever that simple nowadays. I've just replaced the throttle potentiometer on my 05 Diesel Astra (kept throwing up the fault code, going to limp home mode and revs intermittently hanging up) and noticed that it had about 5 or 6 wires to the bloody thing - just for an effing potentiometer!

I was looking at the wiring diagram from the Haynes book of generalisations, I noticed high speed and low speed can buses. Is there a good reference on the net that explains about this, I'm out of touch with modern car electrics?

give you a decent understanding of the basics. Either that, or it'll make you scream loudly and attack your Astra with a large axe before buying an older car with technology a mere mortal can comprehend.

It is not really worth trying to catch up, you never will. Some friends of mine went to a conference on diagnostics recently at Brands Hatch, it basically ended by saying that it will not be possible to have 'do everything' kit and that specialisation was the future. Sounded a bit depressing, I thought !

The current trend towards electronic control and monitoring of every item including the brakes will soon mean that nothing is fixable at a DiY level, it will also make any repairs prohibitively expensive and cars will be scrapped at a very young age rather than have a service (can you imagine a ten year old C5 having a 50 k service ? it won't happen)

I don't see that early obsolescence due to excessive complexity is actually good for the planet.

I think I'll re-engine the Jensen with a Gardner 5LW. So long as there's Diesel available on the planet then I'll have cheap transport that I can easily fix!

that has a nice picture that helps with understanding. It makes sense to me some more now because my Disco has a body control module - always thought it was to do with the rear air suspension but it obviously does much more. I have no idea where the BCM lives on my Astra, there's an alloy lump next to the battery, I wonder if that's it?

the cruise control module (if fitted) is by the battery

BCM is normally inside the cabin, unless you want the electronics close to something for power/emc then there's no point putting them somewhere unpleasant.
