Clio 1.6RXE Auto gearshift linkage came adrift at gearbox arm

I had to call out AA just before Xmas.

T reg Clio 1.6 RXE linkage Socket to auto gearbox came adrift from Ball stud on gearbox arm. and trouble was, although it was in Park, the faulty, detached linkage told interlock arbitrarily that selection was in Reverse (reversing lights on when ignition on) and therefore would not allow starting!!

AA man showed me that cheapo nylon moulded socket was too enlarged to snap back in place. Also said this poor engineering is common nowadays. Sticky tape around it got me the 2kms journey home!

New cable from gearstick will cost approx £71 and I was informed a new upgraded bracket at £33 is also needed + labour + VAT.

Have fabricated from mild steel a 1" stepped securing clamp which is s/tap screwed to the arm yet gently palms the socket top - to ensure that the linkage socket cannot detach upwards, when driving over a bump.

Why couldn't Renault incorporate that on Day 1?

Because then people wouldn't have to replace the worn parts at huge expense, silly.

Isn't it sad when what should qualify as a bodge is actually better than the original part?

Well done that man.

Its designed to last the life of the auto gearbox, which in your case has outlasted the linkage-just...

Funny you should say that, Tim. How tedious this just-enough under-engineering game is. Car was only able to go backwards during auto box breakdown five months ago. So we had a replacement TPO gearbox £1,100 recond'd, guaranteed installed in a day by transmission specialists in Charlton - Oil pressure test 500 mls later as a check. Renault would have charged us over £3,200 (car was worth less!). When removing old auto box, they never touched the ball and socket joint, as they detached the selector arm with its profiled square hole engaging with the box's square spigot, by first removing a compression screw and nut. Reversed procedure for linking to next box. Jim

Now there's a surprise with a Renault auto...!

It's well known in the trade not to touch *any* of these, as they are guarenteed to fail.[1]

Tim.. [1] the old Mk1 clio 1.4 3 speed auto is reliable, anything else, no.

Bit late in the day to find out what Clio gearboxes to shun according to the maxim.. We've had it six?? years since new - a T August reg, what's that in English? Incidentally, I was told by the transmission people that Renault, Citroen, Peugeot and Seat? autos all use the same model of box, regardless of engine cc. Can this possibly be true? Jim
