It sounds like the clutch in your Vauxhall Combo 1.7 van diesel has worn out and needs to be replaced. This can be a relatively involved repair and will likely require the services of a professional mechanic. The clutch linkage snapping is likely a symptom of the worn out clutch. In addition to replacing the clutch, it's also a good idea to have the rest of the transmission and drivetrain inspected to ensure that there is no additional damage.

Before bringing your Vauxhall Combo 1.7 van diesel to a mechanic, you can try a few things to troubleshoot the issue with the clutch. Here are a few things you can check:

  1. Clutch fluid level: Check the level of the clutch fluid in the reservoir and make sure it is at the correct level. Low fluid levels can cause a stiff clutch pedal.
  2. Clutch cable or linkage: Check the clutch cable or linkage for any signs of wear or damage. Make sure there are no kinks or frays in the cable and that the linkage is properly adjusted.
  3. Air in the clutch system: Check for any air bubbles in the clutch fluid. Air in the system can cause a stiff pedal.
  4. Worn clutch: Check the clutch for any signs of wear, such as a glazed appearance or a thinned friction surface.
  5. Check the clutch master and slave cylinder.

If you are not comfortable or have no experience doing these checks, it is best to bring the vehicle to a professional mechanic. These checks are a quick way to diagnose the problem and can give you an idea of what to expect in terms of cost and repair time.
