Converting 1.9 VW diesel engine

Which 1.9 is it? the old indirect injection, or an SDI?

The standard answer is "Sell the car and buy a turbodiesel", by the way :-)

Yip would work out cheaper, less hassle, and also cheaper on the insurance as having to list it as a modified motor can cost more than the actual motor your trying to achieve.

Best bet would be to whip out the stock engine and drop in a turbo lump (IIRC early Passat ones are relatively easy, modern PD ones harder).

However seeing as the OP is thinking of putting it in a T25, there are loads of other, better, options. I mentioned the forums in the post above; one of those has a modded engine forum.

I'm guessing you want acceleration _and_ economy. Sounds silly, I know, but a Subaru (petrol) engine will drop into one of those, and give bags more power and be more economical too! Add LPG and you have the ultimate miser. It will cost, of course, but in a Westy Joker it's probably worth it in the long run.

My dad had a 'cooking' Impreza 1.8GL - that struggled to top 26mpg in normal use.

It's all relative. A typical 1.9 DG petrol in a T25 returns 18-20 mpg. The Subaru engine mated to the same gearbox can return 30. Even 26 would be an improvement!
