Which engine? any fuel in it? spanner just means it is overdue for a service.

Its an 08 plate 1.4 design

Ah, the 08 changes things. the spanner in a car symbol is the immobiliser light, it should light briefly 5 secs or so when the ign is turned on and then go out, if it flashes it won't start because the immobiliser is on. AFAIK the light staying on means there is a fault logged, but it should still spin over at least.

When you try to start it, is there a clunk from the starter? or just silence? If there is a clunk: Does the engine turn over if you put it in top gear, handbrake off and push the car? or is it seized?

If there is no clunk, is it an auto?

I would put a fly lead from battery positive to the starter to ensure that it can spin over before trying anything else. If the starter does nothing then there is your fault, but it is a bit new to be likely.

Brother had it towed to vauxall apparently two sensors had lost the settings and cant communicate so they reprogramed them nice little earner £60 diagnostic £45 to reprogramme the two sensors (body sensor and fuel sensor ??)

the joys of owning a modern car, lets hope it doesn't happen again. Did Vauxhall say why they had lost communication? Was the old battery on its last legs before renewal? maybe removing the battery caused the problems with the sensors. It is normal practice nowadays to keep the car powered with an auxiliary battery while replacing the battery, just in case. In fact that is exactly what I have just this moment been doing on an elderly customers car, the battery had got too low to start because he hasn't used it for three months !! Rather than take any chances on immobilisers, radios etc. I used a starter pack to keep it alive while taking his old battery off and put a used battery in its place while I charge and test his one.

Be battery had got a bad cell when i tested it last night ad we did replace it for a new one

The hadnt a clue why they lost communication , they said a battery change shouldnt have caused any issues.

All i can think of is some sought of electromagnetic spike.
