Dodgy clutch(?) on 97Astra

Folks :- I hope you can point me in the right direction.

I think the clutch on my elderly astra is slipping, on the motor way I sometimes see the revs increasing without any corresponding increase in speed this is sorted by my putting my foot down on the clutch and bringing it back slowly. Also when pulling off from a standing start (for instance onto a roundabout) there's engine revs but not a great deal of speed, which is a bit of a worry when traffic is bearing down on you! :-)

Is the clutch on the way out or is it that the clutch pedal needs adjusting? If it's the clutch does anyone have a rough idea how much that'll cost to get replaced?

Thanks

Kev

The clutch plate was worn out. I don't know the cost of replacement but I believe it is a fairly simple job on an Astra. If you were to ask me to guess, I would say £100 for the parts only, £200 parts and labour at a £30 per hour garage and £300- £350 at a main dealer, for a full clutch replacement.

sounds like a worn out clutch, expect a bill for about 220 quid all in

Would be nice if we got a reply to say if it is fixed or not......

That situation only happens about once in a hundred queries, nice to know the answer and the cost etc. Some people even thank you!

I am pleased to say I have had a few, some direct and some via the newsgroup. The ones that are annoying are where there is a niggly problem that several attempts have failed at, the owner says he will take it to a dealer, but the actual answer is never published.

Glad I posted the solution to my over-revving zetec engine then!

Yes, and I have. I suppose some people reply direct as you say, which I don't see and therefore think the picture blacker than it is.

If it's anything like the old cavaliers you *can* just replace the friction disk for about 30 quid and it takes about half an hour if you know what you're doing, maybe less.

Folks :- Thanks for the replies.

The reason for asking the question is I've booked the car in for a service and I'll have a chat with the mechanic about the clutch then. I was hoping you'd say it was a simple adjustment and if the mechanic offered to replace the entire clutch I'd tell him to sling his hook! Also if the cost of replacement was over =A3300, I'd think long and hard about scrapping the car when it became undriveable.

I'll let you know how it all turns out. (This is something I normally do as I find google groups to be a great resource for answering these sort of questions so the least I can do is contribute a little bit to the pool of knowledge out there.)

Thanks again

Kevin

for prices. Like I said before I think you don't need to separate the gearbox from the engine to do these - just clamp up the clutch and it drops out so I would have thought the whole job would be less than 200.

Hi! The mechanic hopped in the car, drove it round the block and refused to service it as the clutch was 'slipping its arse off' (I guess that's a technical term) and refused to service it, on the basis the clutch would go any minute. He reckoned it would cost =A3250 for a new clutch (because there is no window to remove the old one the gear box has to come out making it a big job plus =A3100 for a service.) I reckoned my cut off point was =A3300, hmmm......

Hi! I think the fact the guy turned away 'good' business means he does have some standards. It's just I'm going to have to think over the weekend whether it's worth shelling out =A3350 on a car that's worth I guess =A3500.... Regards Kevin

Try taking it to "Mr Clutch" or somesuch specialist clutch place and see if the price is cheaper. Also on such a low valued car I don't see why you're spending 100 on servicing. Surely an oil and filters change would do?

Just 'cos a car isn't worth much to sell doesn't mean it's not worth spending some money on, but maybe not 350.
