Fastest method of demisting

On my SD1 it was because the spare wheel well was full of water. ;-)

How about on a BMW 535 with an auto button. I do not yet know what it is that is automatic yet! How should I dry my windows quickly? pete

The auto function is clever. Start the car from cold on a cold day and the fan stays on low. Until the engine delivers useful heat. Then it speeds up until the set temperature is reached when it slows down to a quiet setting. And when the car is at near the correct temperature, the cold air face vents (if selected) come on. Clever.

To demist, use the defrost button. This closes off everything but the screen vents and runs the blower on full at full heat. Press it again to go back to normal.

No. I fully expected my E39 to have a heated front screen, but it's not even an option. Wonder if there's a patent involved?

Thanks for that Dave. I wasn't sure what those button were for even though I have thoroughly read the handbook I cannot remember it all. I have got the 'phone working and except for some minor snags with warning light about brake linings and brake lights I am well pleased with my motor and I hope it will last me out now unless I win the lootery;-) pete

Ford have the patent on the heated screen- they wont even allow Volvo to use it!

If you have the heat on, when the windscreen warms up, it will not mist up.

As someone else said, the water the AC takes out of the air condenses the cooling element of the AC, and when you turn it off, the water that has not dripped off evaporates off again, and heads straight for your windscreen. Leaving the AC off for the last 5-10 mins of driving lets it dry out, and stops smelly things living in the damp bits.
