Fiesta clutch going (take 2)

Hi,

Sorry if this eventually appears twice, I posted this via Google Groups on Saturday morning and it appears not to have propagated to any other news server!

Original post:

Hi,

2000 Fiesta 1.25 Zetec 73k miles.

My clutch has suddenly started slipping (has been doing it a bit for a while but now its gotten quite bad). Looks like it's a hydraulic clutch.

Questions are firstly could it be anything (hopefully less complicated) than needing new linings and secondly should I try to do it myself (have done brakes, servicing, suspension arms and a few other bits and have a largish trolley jack).

Been quoted a bit over £200 by MrClutch after someone at work recommended them but they have horrendous reviews online! Or I could take it to Ford and pay over £500 :)

Thoughts?

Thanks yet again,

Peter.

I wouldn't spend over £500 on a 12 year-old Fiesta...

Find a decent local independent garage with good feedback from friends.

If it is slipping then it needs changing. It cannot be done by any garage for 200 quid. The parts are most of that figure and it is not a particularly easy job. 500 is about right for a three part clutch on a modern fiesta. I have changed a few, some at 60k, some at 100k. If you want to do it yourself then the easiest way for an amateur without a vehicle lift would be to hoist the engine out, rather than touch gearbox, drive shafts etc. etc.

Well there is that :) It's a good runner though (usually)

This seems like a good plan if I'm not going to DIY.

Thanks,

Peter.

Would need to rent a hoist though obviously and presumably there'd be a lot of hoses and lines to disconnect! Still I like the idea as I was imagining rolling around on the floor all day :)

I'll give it some serious thought.

Thanks,

Peter.
