Ford Fiesta 1.25 zetec engine

Hi,

Friend of mine has a fiesta 1.25 zetec on a W 2000 plate with a poorly engine apparently the head gasket has gone what is the best course of action buy a second hand engine or have the head checked and if ok fit a new gasket finances are a little on the tight side so far we've seen engines for £300 any, will these be any good or a dog?

Unless there's history, s**te. And I'd spend £100 getting a new cambelt and pulley kit fitted to one regardless.

The question about putting a new engine into a fiesta has been asked at least a couple of times before (try a groups search you might find the thread) and both times I've seen it the conclusion was that it would be cheaper to get another mk4 or 5 fiesta as there's still a load out there (mind you they seem to now be beginning to get to the stage of needing new engines!!).

A decent recon Zetec is quite cheap now.

But are they any good? How do you check? I've read lots of horror stories about engine reconditioning outfits.

Yes - I'm the one with the 1.25l Zetec that burns a litre of oil in 1000 miles but it's still running perfectly well so long as you put oil in it every time you fill it with petrol :-)

Check out your Ford dealer for the price of a new engine, they were knocking out new (not recon) 2l Zetecs a few months ago for £750. I know it's a totally different engine, but you never know... :)

Now a 2l Zetec _would_ be fun!

These ones are done properly where I got my Pinto from. You can watch them rebuild the engine and in the case of classics, you can leave a digital camera with the car and they'll photograph the whole build and install.

When they put the engine in my car, every part bolted to it was cleaned and repainted if needed - they even stripped and repainted the radiator cowling. Took 7hrs to fit the engine with all the faffing.

Cheers Conor. I'll give them a shout if the oil problem gets much worse.
