Ford Ka W reg Luxury Rear Wiper

Hi all,

Ive got a problem with a Ford Ka where ther rear wiper will not function when requested from the stalk. The wash part of it works but the wipe function doesnt. Ive checked the fuses and they are fine.

Are there any common problems with these before i get a multimeter out and start having to go over the whole system to find the fault?

Thanks, Will

If it's the same as on late 90's Fiestas there should be 3 metal pins which stick out of the bottom of the tailgate door and make contact with metal plates when the door is closed.

Where the other bloke said. RHS of the boot slam panel are 3 or 4 flat contact plates. Corresponding pins stick out of the bottom of the tailgate. I can't photo them as my old Ka is most likely part of a building in China.

Its unlikely to be the contacts that others mention. The most common cause of the rear wiper not working on the Ka is a poor earth. There isn't a hard wired earth between the tailgate and the chassis. Instead the tailgate is earthed to the chassis through the tailgate hinge pins. These get shitty and corrode and eventually you lose your earth. You need to remove the pins, clean them up and refit them. With the aid of a helper, you can remove one pin at a time without taking the tailgate off.

What happened to the good old days when people were prepared to go to a bit of effort, eh?

Seconded. At least that was the problem with the wife's Ka3. Almost added a bonding cable between body and boot, however, a couple of taps of the hinge pins (just to loosen them) and things started working - was going to monitor over the next couple of weeks to decide whether to add the bonding cable or not, that was three years ago - still going strong on the pins.
