Garage labour charges?

All, This should open a can of worms in the group. I've always been a DIY man and I've just acquired a Skoda Felicia which has developed a fault on the engine (VAG). Now I need to take this to a 'garage' of some sort to get the problem identified. My problem is what do you expect to pay to a garage for the hourly rate? Main dealer and local garages would be a good pointer. Any experiences or known facts appreciated. This may help others also. Cheers Ben.

£40 to £60 per hour. Not to mention £180 for a service which takes less than an hour and costs £20 for engine oil and three filters. If you are a diy home mechanic and the fault cannot be traced by the usual means-using your senses, and checking that there is fuel and ignition try a small garage with diagnostic equipment. A main dealer will charge half an hour to lift the bonnet. DaveK.

Dave, your probably a really nice bloke but the quality of your grammar and spelling speaks volumes about the quality of main dealer staff (particularly Ford staff).

Stuart.

Smaller garages would charge £30+vat an hour, if the rate is any lower than that I would not expect much in the way of customer service if there are any problems. Main dealers are £60 min, and size and location can make that as high as £90 per hour.

Why not ask mates or friends for recommendations.

You might find the guy under the arches, a real genuine guy, the garage is untidy a bit greasy, calenders on the wall, works in dirty overalls. None of this clinical cleanliness, that always ends in the customer paying.

Somebody who is the real backbone, somebody who makes this country great. Besides which you might get a decent cup, I mean mug of tea, not that vending machine rubbish.

Well at least he doesn't top post, and if you are going to pull someone on spelling and grammar, then try to make sure that you get you own right.

More importantly, the standard of someone's English does not reflect in any way on their mechanical ability.

"you own"??? This thread is cursed! :)

I couldn't agree more, and if somebody is kind enough to post a helpful and perfectly clear response (as the post in question was) then they certainly get my vote.

Many if not most modern cars need to be plugged into a computer to diagnose engine problems (unless it's something glaringly obvious, of course) which may limit you to certain garages as not all will have the right equipment. If you have a local Hometune they could be worth a try

- IIRC they charge a fixed price to do the basic diagnostic check.

I've just had some work done to the Volvo at an independent specialist garage which charged 45 quid + VAT an hour, to give you a rough idea of what you might expect to pay.
