What is the very approximate going price for an old car with about 10 months or so tax and MOT left to run?
Am thinking of those cars which are most probably on their last year before being scrapped.
(If it makes any difference am looking at London/SE area.)
Are we likely to be looking at £300 for something like an old Mondeo or perhaps an old Corolla which would be tidy enough and maybe 15 years old but not worth keeping on the road after the MOT+tax expire?
£300 would get to a Nissan Primera. This would be a better option than just about anything else, as they have a camchain rather than belt, which means one less thing to worry about
The problem with £300 bangers with cambelts is that previous owners are unlikely to have spent the 200 quid or so to replace the belts, so the engine is essentially a time-bomb waiting for a belt to snap.
Last September I bought a 14 year old Cavalier with 200,000 miles, 9 months MOT and 3 months tax for £175. Two owners, the last for 11 years.
It passed another MOT in June with minimal spend. It leaks water in, and petrol out (if you brim the tank) but it hasn't broken down.
A friend bought a Mk2 mondeo for £300 which ran for two years till he traded it.
Shame you're in London. Selling wifes old Mundano in a few weeks.
