May not be any help at all...

but my Polo did almost exactly what you're reporting - it turned out to be a blocked fuel filter - had got a dodgy batch of fuel somewhere and had gunged it all up.

Might be worth a look? On the polo it was easy enough to spot..

Have you replaced the distributor cap and rotar arm lately? happened to me when I first had my car thinking it was the petrol but wasn't.

Where is the fuel filter on the Polo I can't for the life of me find it, haven't traced the fuel pipes yet. Replaced the fuel filter on my Golf just fine, but girlfriends Polo needs doing too. Thanks.

Thanks for the thoughts guys - I've had a colleague look at it, and he says he can get it running if he bypasses the carb (or something like that) so he thinks something is preventing the fuel from reaching the engine. That's as far as he can go with it though, and he's helping me get the car to a local garage who should be able to do more. Fingers crossed! Any fresh thoughts?

Aye. No mk3 Golfs came with a carb so your mate might have a hard time ;). OTOH if he's bypassing the fuel filter, it sounds like that might work. The MK3 might have a dizzy and rotor cap, but I'm not 100%...

Yup, I think that was me talking rubbish about carbs - he was bypassing something. Anyway, I stopped by the garage and the guy there has got it working okay, apparently it was just a wire off something. I'll get the full story tomorrow hopefully. Took him 2 hours and he's charging me 80 quid. Which I guess is fair enough - I'm sure I could have paid a lot more.

You don't say what version of polo you have, but on the Mk3 polos it's under the boot floor, on the right looking from the back, next to the road wheel. Later ones may be the same.
