Honda Civic gearbox/differential

Honda Civic 1.4 late 2001 45,000 miles

For some month have been hearing metallic grinding noise about

1500-2000 rpm when pulling away in first then second gear. Recently noticed it was getting louder and sometimes heard in 3rd gear (at same rpm). Not a whine - more like an old treadle sewing machine.

Took it to the local garage today and they think it is differential as it is a common fault with the model. They are going to give me price for removing the gearbox, sending away for repair and refitting - with car off-road for a week or so. They advised against a second-hand gearbox (which could be done in a day) as it could also be faulty.

Anyone had similar problem or experience? Obviously can't make a decision until I see the final estimate to see if worth spending on 10 year old car.

if it varies by gear then it is more likely the input shaft bearing, this is probably the same gearbox as was in some of the rover equivalents to that honda, and I have changed that bearing myself, the symptoms were a whirry noise that diminishes with higher gears, almost un-noticeable in top, not an easy job for an amateur though. I would not want to put in a s/h gearbox unless you can drive it first.

On the rover I charged him about 350 quid for the whole job, today I would charge about 500. Same day.

Thanks for that. Google found some "input shaft bearing" stuff - although the youtube videos were nowhere near as loud as mine. Whirring is a good description. Not a job I am equipped to tackle (too old / no garage / unskilled) so hope the garage gets back to me on Monday.

Fair - trouble is I'm in Central Scotland :-(

Thanks again - will come back with a follow-up.

Gearbox repair at specialist £350+VAT Including removal and replacement, total was £600. Quiet as a mouse now.

Of course the radio code needed finding and the engine warning light was on. Scanner indicated O2 sensor heater fault. Located two wires on connector which had pulled back a bit - re-inserted pins in housing and reset fault code. Noticed slight oiliness on bottom of gearbox so wiped off with cloth and found drain plug not tightened.

Hopefully now all ok.

Next is to get someone to look at the exhaust (original 2001) - the back box is blowing slightly but the mid box still looks fine.
