I agree - but sadly the other components let things down, or are more difficult/expensive to replace. Electro-hydraulic power steering and other front suspension and steering components on my VX are frighteningly fragile compared to its Cavalier predecessor, clutch and other components that necessitate removal of the subframe to fix (compare the old Cavalier in-situ clutch replacement and cable mechanism) - I could go on. Not to forget plastic bits in inlet systems that cause problems/cost lots to replace (throttle bodies on theK11 Micra are getting cheaper, but still a lot of money to cure an irritating idle problem on an otherwise perfectly-running
12 year old with 96k on the clock). Different-shaped bolts that cause you to have to buy new sockets to undo them (I have 3 or 4 different shapes now) for those jobs that are still do-able yourself. Xenon lights with frighteningly expensive bulbs, that on some cars need a garage to convert them for continental driving - and convert them back. Stay legal all the time? - How? Bulb replacement that on some cars (e.g. Renault) necessitates dismantling parts of the bodywork to get at them (try doing that on a wet car park in the middle of a winter's night). Timing belts that drive water pumps - which means water pump failure == engine blow-up - and which need removing to carry-out an otherwise simple thermostat replacement - which in turn becomes more important because of the knock-on effect on temperature sensing/fuel delivery/ and ultimatley catalytic converter reliability. Lighting systems that need complex electronics fitted and/or ECU reprogramming if you want to tow or even use a trailer board with a bike rack. Need I say more?
