Jingling Jag

My 2010 3L V6 diesel XF has developed a noise like a faintly rattling cowbell when driven. On the open road with the windows closed it's scarcely audible but I drove into a multi-story car park today and could hear it clearly.

I've had it up on my ramps and had a bit of a grovel around underneath but everything looks neat, tidy and tight down there.

Could it be something to do with the brakes? I will be taking it to the garage at some point but in the meantime it would be nice to have some ideas. Pads and disks are relatively new btw.

On me old Fiesta, I found some bits of the heatshield above the exhaust had come lose. Your description sounds similar to what I could hear until I got some big mudguard washers and fastened it up again..

tapping the exhaust may show up an internal rattle on one of the boxes.

Yes. It was the heatshield to the cat. on my BMW. Main dealer wanted to charge megabucks for a new one. Local BMW specialist welded it back on for not a lot. Many years ago, and still fine.

Same on our old Astra with the heatshield over the exhaust manifold.

Never did get round to fixing it before it was squashed by a (hit and run) 'arctic whilst parked. ;-(
