Laguna gearbox.

It's a 97 1.8 8valve. I like the car but the gearchange is shit, very stiff and generally unpleasant to use. Is this typical of the car and more importantly can anything be done about it? I am thinking about having it chipped up but unless this problem can be solved I'm not going to bother. All suggestions greatfully received.

I have a 99 1.9dTI with 165000 miles. gear change and general transmission is mint with no slack joints. Gear change is slick. It got better with a recent gear oil change. Can't remember the grade I was advised to get, but it wasn't the cheap stuff.

Maybe you need to change the gear oil and ensure the correct grade is put in......................

PS, wouldn't bother about chipping a 1.8 8V engine. If you can't live with it...buy a car with a more powerful engine

Up until July this year I had a W reg RTi, that had a stiff linkage and was cured by getting under the car, popping off the splashgard covering where the linkage goes into the bottom of the gearbox and giving it a squirt of spray grease. Work the gear lever for a few minutes in all directions and it was fine after that.

The 2.0 16v RTi I had has plenty of power, 140brake. It was the Renault engined version not Volvo one, added benefit it would return slightly more mpg (35 on a long motorway run) than the older engine and be as fast if not faster. If I could live with the image of the car again I would get a late plate W or X with that same engine, by then they were well specced and quite well sorted. I had only one failure in the 4 years & 135k miles that I had mine.... water getting down to the plugs and causing a misfire because I was a bit enthusiastic cleaning under the bonnet! Easy fix too, pull coil packs and plugs out, leave to dry and then put it all back together again.

I should follow up the original post, but it never appeared on my machine.

Unlike most boxes, the 6 speed Laguna gearbox must not be filled until the oil runs out of the filler hole. Instead, it must be completely drained and then filled with exactly 2.4 litres of a specialist lubricant. Going right up to the filler hole overfills it by a good

50%.

You may already be aware of this, but if you're not and you did it as a DIY job, then you need to get it sorted before it damages the gearbox (if it hasn't done so already.)

Well that's pretty much what it says here:
