Related: ABS warning light "on" is a MOT failire, so the must be an ABS warning light? But even more obscure than brake light.

Not obscure, as has been said many times, a 'brake lamp failure' indicator isn't that common amongst cars on the road in the UK in general (which was the point of this sub thread). ;-)

Cheers, T i m

The requirement for an ABS failure warning light is built in on all cars that have ABS, the operation of the light is checked at the MoT. ABS failure may cause an extremely dangerous situation when the brakes are applied.

There is no legal requirement for any car to have a brake light failure warning, and even with no brake lights the car is not dangerous to drive. There is not even a legal or MOT requirement for vehicles to even be fitted with brake lights (or any other lights)

If cars are ever required to have brake lamp failure lights then it may be included in the test.

I got very confused looks when I explained to one woman that the "earth" to her rear light cluster had failed and her indicator would go out and the brake light flash instead when she applied the brakes!

johannes submitted this idea :

I don't recall every being flashed from behind on a motorway. If the middle lane is full, if I am towing (unable to move to L3) and there is space on the left (especially a lot of space) and I am following an HGV not making much progress in the middle lane and there are faster vehicles building up behind me - I pull over to the left where there is space.

It is basically much safer to have lots of room ahead of you and you have much better sight lines in such circumstances, than nose to tail in the middle lane.

A wall in the dark, a shop window, or even a car parked behind will reflect them and prove they work, for those who care enough to check them.

I learned to drive, before motorways were common. My introduction to motorways was one of how much easier / safer they were to drive upon.
