Loosened CV boot.

I've got a CV boot ona Focus estate come adrift, fell off after reassembling the front after a wheel beraing swap. Done maybe 300 miles and ejected a lot of grease, and also over gravelly roads in the wet - not ideal but that's why you do weekly checks to see this sort of thing I suppose.

How to fix? Clean the join in situ and repack with CV grease? Or worth pulling off the car, swilling all the gunk out with diesel and regrease or god forbid split the joint apart and do it that way? The boot holds in place and hasnt yet come off after some enthusiastic full lcok tunrs so I think that will at least hold OK

if you want to save the joint (may already be too late ) then a complete clean off the shaft may do it. check the cost of a new joint, if not too dear then just clean up and grease up and see how long it goes for, it will give loads of warning before terminal failure.

OK I had the car up on ramps and had a look. There is still some grease in there - the rollers are coated and there doesnt seem to be much muck, well none at all in there.

Really debating if it's worth taking the joint apart for a clean and fresh grease - there is no play or signs of scoring so I think it's probably still in good nick.

boots often come off, clean grease and re-fit is all that I would usually do

I know, just worried about the ingress of gravel as it was offroad almost that I was driving over. It seems clean though and there is no play even though it's done 130k, so I just wiped it out and repacked with moly grease.

If it goes it goes - I've had good service and new joints are in my maintenance budget anyway. Thanks for the advice.
