M reg 1.6 Cavalier issue

Can anybody shed any advice on an issue a friend is having with his Cavalier?

1.6 M reg Cavalier with single point injector, non Bosch ECU. Car will run perfectly OK for days, then suddenly for no reason loose power during driving and may stall, rev counter does not fal to zero right away but dies with engine revs. Attempt to re-start right away and engine will turn but not start. Wait 20 seconds and it will turn over perfectly and then carry on as if nothing has happened.

ECU shows no fault codes for the falt, fuel pump and single point injector changed for spare with no resolution. Friend suspects fuel pump relay but I was wondering if MAF sensor may be going intermittant in operation due to drop in engine power output. Fault appears to be more prone to popping up on shortish trips and in coldish weather compared to summer heat but temp sender is not suspected (unless you know better).

All pointers helpful, this is getting annoying.

Thanks, in advance.

Try the fuel pump relay first.

Check the engine earth strap - it runs from the gearbox to the inner wing IIRC. If it's corroded it can create some very odd symptons.

I would hotwire the fuel pump and try it again.

Had words with the owner of the M reg Cavalier and apparently the earth straps are ok in all respects. He has a spare MAP sensor to fit but cannot find the fuel pump relay as the Haynes manual is (surprise surprise) downright clueless. Anybody any idea where this relay should lurk?

Should be under the RH kick panel, usually yellow IIRC

So far the single point injector, fuel pump and MAP sensor have been replaced. Car is now being soak tested to see what happens.
