Is this likely to be DIY-able for a novice on these (and most new!) engines? Any ideas (guesses, even!) at garage repair cost (to enable cost benefit comparison) welcome.

We've tested that already and the battery is fine. The mechanic said that it has to be one of the engine sensors but since he's not a Mazda dealer it's prohibitively expensive to just start plugging in new sensors.
Not do-able for a novice. Reckon on around £150-£200 at a garage.
Oh dear, I thought it might be possible. Check: Does your estimate include any raplacement valves, etc. that might be needed? I've heard that quite a lot of top-end rudeness can happen when the belt snaps!
A friend had the belt snap on his Megane Scenic 2.0 last year. His repair bill was £900. I think £200 is wildly optimistic. Sorry for the bad news :-(

You will have bent valves in all probability (though you dont say which engine your car has, and if you are determined to fix it at home and have reasonable mechanical skills, you'd be best to source a 2nd hand but good cylinder head and swap it with yours, unless you have the time to have your head refurbed.
200 quid is likely to cover the parts only, doing the work yourself, not someone elses labour!!tim,,

Depends.
I think the parts bill for my mates Micra was over £200 when his belt went, and that was eight years ago with me doing the work.
Poor guy. Owned his first car three weeks and his first fixit job was me teaching him the finer arts of a top end rebuild. He swaps his belts when he's meant to now!

They only sell 'em in inlet or exhaust sets - if you need one inlet and one exhaust as I did for the wife's Clio they will insist you take 8 valves, costing nearly £300.
So I went up the road to the engine rebuilders and had 'em the next day, two valves, £8 each.
There are two versions of 1.4 and the year is important.
60 - 72,000 miles (depending on exact model and year) or 5 years (all models) whichever comes firstmrcheerful
