I have a 02 Renault Megane with two keys, one works fine on central locking and starting the car, the other lights up when i press it but does nothing to aid starting the car, so i guess the key or the car need to get on friendly terms with each other?
Is there a home diy way of doing this?

if you have no key number or a 5 or 7 digit key number then only a dealer can do it, 8 digit keys can be added:
keys with 8 character head mark ensure ignition switched OFF press vehicle central door locking button for more than 5 seconds Doors should lock then unlock carry out the following within 10- 15 seconds press first key lock/unlock button twice (once on some models ) press second key lock/unlock button twice ( on some just once) Doors will lock or unlock
