Mostly they're producing poor quality copies of European cars, which either wouldn't pass EU crash tests / C&U regulations - or would leave them open to legal action for effectively producing 'fakes'.

I guessed it'd be something like that .. or copies of fast-selling spares and parts as well no doubt, with the same attention to detail as oem's .. ;(

Yeah there are some interesting examples, I think there are chinese versions of X5 and Fiat Panda. Maybe you can find on internet. But none of there are exported. Surely, exporting is a different business and they will be very careful of image.

E.g. I know when I was in denmark, only the best beacon and butter is exported; then rest is consumed locally.

Maybe they want us to buy them, I wouldn't touch one even if I could afford one, too much of a bad reputation buying Chinese stuff IMO.

They've just started to sell "Great Wall" brand cars in Italy. They seem to be trying to market a downmarket alternative to the Dacia Logan.

Yup, my sister's car. She knows nothing about cars so a Passat is an ideal car for her. A box with wheels that makes a noise and moves. I loathe it, typical VW smoke and mirrors, nowhere near as good as they and their fanbois claim.

No, she didn't pay a penny for it.

It's a years old design that has been tarted up a bit then farmed out to employ some people and some Chinese. OK, all car (anything?) manufacturers do this to an extent keeping old model lines going, but they tout it as an all new thing which it isn't. A resurrected badge doesn't mean it's 'the real thing'.

And I wouldn't, having had experience of a chinese (Honda copy) motorbike and generator, trust it to last beyond a year of reasonable use. By which time it's price will be heading south with a vengeance to the point it'll be almost unsaleable until it gets to the low hundreds.

Walk away, there are far better cars for less money.

I agree with you though, a Chinese clone of a car that wasn't good to start with seems both pointless and a certain disappointment. However when people adk questions about such cars they don't want an objective reply. They want everyone to tell them that it is a brilliant idea.

What's it a clone of? I thought it was based on what was going to be Rover's new mid-sized car if they hadn't gone bust and I haven't read anything different outside this group. AIUI it was to be based on the
