Mondeo handbrake fault

Jul 20, 2006 6 Replies

I have a W Reg MK2 Mondeo, my problem; to me is a strange one, the handbrake doesnt appear to hold properly, ie; sometimes when you get in the car it creaks & moves slightly, it has also rolled back into my neighbours car on 1 occasion (with the handbrake fully on). also when pulling away after releasing the handbrake it sometimes clonks as though ceased on, my local garage supposedly "looked" at it but said its fine any ideas of what might be wrong?

Probably the handbrake mechanism in the rear calipers/drums has seized or the self adjusters on the rear brakes aren't working.

Had one of these a few weeks ago, one side handbrake cable broken and the same side self adjusters siezed, the MOT test showed n/s handbrake non existent and low foot brake. Replaced shoes and adjuster, and cable...

there was (a long time ago now) a recall on handbrake levers on mondeos where we would change the complete lever assembly under warrenty carnt remember tho if it was this model year or the early 2001. the fault was how you desribe it as above.

A clonk on release tends to suggest to me that it may have a leaky=20 caliper on one side or the other. Once brake fluid gets in it can make=20 the shoe stick on. It could also lubricate it enough to let it roll for=20 a while. The Wife's car had a duff caliper on one side and it took two=20 years for it to get bad enough that the MOT picked it up. I'm not in the=20 habit of taking the drum off regularly and didn't know why it was=20 sticking on at the time. New shoes and calipers sorted the problem for=20 about =A350.
