Mondeo heater blower

MK2 Mondeo, heater fan only working on 4. I believe it's the resistor pack that's gone.

Where is it in the car, how much is a new one, and is it an easy fix?

cheers Mike P

More likely to be the connector melted.

Heater fan housing above the passenger footwell. Remove the glovebox and look for likely screws ;-)

You're wrong. It's pretty much nearly always the resistor pack cos it's cooled by the fresh air vent which ends up with sod all air flowing through it cos people don't change the pollen filter so the thermal fuse blows.

To the OP. Take the glovebox out. To the right behind it in the fresh air pipe, you'll see a block with a wire connector on the top. With a flat blade screwdriver, prise it out from the bottom edge. You'll break the clip but they go back OK without it. A simple check with a multimeter will reveal the thermal fuse has blown.

Cheers Conor, I'll sort it out tomorrow. Do I just replace the thermal fuse? I'll change the pollen filter as well while I'm at it.

Yes you can just change the thermal fuse if you can find one.

Hope this helps.

Located in the side of the heater trunking behind the glove box. As well as the resisor pack you will probably need the wiring repair kit too, only a few quid from your ford dealer.

Hi chaps,

Just been reading your replies and you all seemed very knowledgable on the Mondeo, so I wondered wether you might be able to help with a problem I'm having?

I have just purchased a P plate Mondeo Estate (Mk 2). There appears to be 2 problems with the heater blower. Firstly it blows constantly & cannot be turned off. If You turn it to level four it intermittantly turns off as if there were a loose connection. I looked behind the stereo & their appears to be some loose cables & possibly a wired repair, possibly covering a previous fault? The other problem is that the heater only blows out cold air. I have noted that the heater control can only be turned back half way into the cold, so it is constantly stuck in luke warm/hot as it were.

The surrounding facia is a little loose & it seems somebody may have already tried a repair. If anybody hads any idea how to rectify these problems I would be extremely grateful as otherwise it is a very sound car.

Many Thanks, Paul

I did one last week, you'll need the resistor pack and the wiring loom as the "modified" resistor pack has a different plug. Prices seem to have gone up since that website was written, the bits were £18 at my local stealership. Easy enough job, although the wires are heavy-duty so soldering was a bit tricky, use flux :)

Thanks very much for that Tony, the link looks extremely helpful & I will definately try that repair. My only concern is that my fan is running constantly. This may be due to a shoddy repair, When I looked at the car it didn't work at all & I asked the mechanic to fix it. Is this a known fix/bodge? If so is it fairly easy to put right?

Also if anyone can shed any light on the heater control which is stuck in warm, but blows out cold air I would be very grateful.

Again, Many thanks!

The resistor pack I replaced was brown and crispy, really badly burned. The insulation on the wires going into the plug was also burned off, it wouldn't suprise me if there are a couple shorting out under your dash. Dunno whether that would cause the fan to be on permanantly, but sound feasible to me ;(

As for the heater control, can't help I'm afraid :(

It's designed that way.

At least, several Mondeos I drove when they were new, dating from around that era, all did it.

I've no idea why!

Quite a few cars run it on slow to maintain positive pressure in the cabin & reduce wind noise. No idea if that applies to Mondeos though.

I've literally just walked into the house from doing this job on my MK2 Mondeo. It's about 20 mins of a job all done and working perfectly! The parts at my local Ford Dealer came to £19.67 including the VAT. I used heavy duty chocolate block type connectors rather than soldering, as my soldering is s**te.

If you get stuck, just ask!

Thanks for all the advice chaps! It has been very useful. I am only a poor student so I haven't enough money to buy the parts until the weekend! I did however strip down the centre console to try & shed some light on the problem. The multi plug which connects to the blower switch has definately overheated & has burnt out. From looking at wiring diagrams I have managed to deduce that whoever repaired it has used the ignition live from the cars stereo wiring. I also managed to locate the resistor pack, it was difficult to see & I didn't have a torch, but it did appear to show some signs of overheating so it's looking a fairly good bet! I have done a bit more research on the cold air & binding control bezel. There seems to be a lot of talk about flaps jamming or the cable slipping. There is a definate constriction in the cables movement. Has anybody ever heard of this problem? The car heats up fine & seems to maintain the correct temperature, but the blower just continues to blow out cold air. I guess there is also the chance that the heater matrix may be damaged, but it just seems such a coincidence that the controller is so stiff. If anyone could shed any light on that I would be very grateful!

Thanks for all the advice so far, it's been a great help!
