Mondeo spark plugs / HT leads

I have a 98 Mondeo and although the idle revs are correct the engine sounds a little heavier than normal. As a result I think I should change the plugs & leads. Should I go for Ford parts or third party parts? I've been told that NGK plugs are the onbes to go for, and possiblt Splitfire leads - does anyone know how much these would cost vs Ford parts?

Also been told to change the rubber t-piece as this solve the idle problem - where abouts is this located? I'm a novice but been told that its a 30-sec job to pull it out and push in the new piece?

Cheers

TBH, I'd _always_ go for Ford leads & plugs. If you replace them with none OEM parts, the Mondeo has a tendency for the problem to come right back again.

Somewhere round the back of the engine :-)

Don't know myself!

Cheers Pete, that should narrow it down a bit :-)

I've got the Haynes manual but they don't mention it. Here's a good link

Can anyone narrow it down a bit?

Thanks again

Yes go for NGK Plugs Or Splitfire.splitfire are more money but very good NGK or good as well better then the motorcraft that ford use. If you can see if you can get the parts trade be a lot cheaper then paying retail prices

All garages buy there parts at trade then sell them to you at retail prices that means more money + VAT.

NGK are better then any ford sparkplug NGK go for longer i fit NGK all the time and had no come backs with them i found that ford plugs dont last as long as they should do.

Thanks John.

I've just called my local motor discount centre - they do Bosch plugs for £13 and Autospark leads for £16. Unfortunately they don't do NGK or Splitfire so I can't compare prices.

Anyone know how much I should expect to pay for NGK plugs, and possibly Splitfire leads? If anyone can do them at trade prices so much the better :-)

The zetec is fussy about its plugs and leads. I'd stick with the advice you were given earlier about using Ford plugs and leads but TBH, it doesn't sound like they are the problem. I'd find and replace your £4 "T piece" before doing anything else.

If you have no starting, idling or running problems, especially in wet weather, and the fuel consumption is still normal then it's unlikely the plugs or leads are at fault. I don't really know what you mean by "sounds heavier than normal" though.

I'm not at all sure why women like men. We're argumentative, childish, unsociable and extremely unappealing naked. I'm quite grateful they do though.

The idle revs are about correct, but the engine sounds louder than normal. I've had the car for over a year so I know its not normal.

I'll start with the rubber T-piece and see if that solves the problem. The problem I have now is not being able to locate the T-piece - if anyone can give me directions as to where this piece is that would be great.

Thanks

Go to the Ford dealer, and ask them for the T-piece. They'll pull up a load of exploded diagrams on the computer and find it for you...

Directly behind the coil pack under the wiring on the end of the inlet manifold. Hard to describe but easy to find when you start digging around.

If/when you do change your plugs and leads, I would recommend NGK, only cos I've never had any problems with them. Re gap them to 1.0mm or 1.1mm, not the 1.3mm they come out of the bax at. Use the genuine Ford leads or the Bosch ones but nothing else. I've not seen any spurious makes that are good enough or perform without being worse than the ones you've just removed. Its only because the coil output on these engines is so high and firing the plug harder than on most that you get leaks of HT which cause misfires so need leads which are better insulated than most.

Take my word for it , forget all the nonsense about 'alternative' parts. Do not consider using Japanese parts on these cars. Only use genuine Ford components. You will probably find they will cost less than the alternatives anyway. There is an ever increasing problem of system and ECU failure caused by using non-standard parts on modern cars. Dont risk it.
