MOT seatbelts

Car failed it's MOT couple of days ago, brakes, indicators and rear lap belt had disappeared under the seat.

I've sorted all the problems, but the bloody seat belt clip exploded when I pulled it out from under the seat so I couldn't retest it. As no one ever goes in the back, and it's got two 3 point lap belts in the back anyway, can I just remove both parts of the lap belt and test it like that?- it will have 4 working seat belts.. Saab 900 1989 is the car..

I'd have thought so.

And I'd doubt it!

A friend of mine who does MOT testing picked up 'penalty points' for not spotting that a bracket (that really doesn't need to be there) on an Astra exhaust wasn't there, when it should have been. If that is an exhaust bracket that no-one cares about, consider the fuss when the MOT tester finds your car has been homologated for 5 occupants but only has 4 seatbelts..... (Sorry, and all that!)

About 2/3rds of the way down - pictures show that if your car has three rear seats then three belts must be fitted. It appears to follow the shape of the padding.

Take the back seat out for the MOT.

It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "Pete M" saying something like:

Heh. I've just done that on my SOJC. In order to get the lower commercial road tax [1] here (Ireland) it's possible to do a van conversion on a hatchback or estate car. This involves painting out the rear side windows, removing the seats and seatbelts and installing a floor where the seats would be.

[1] I'm paying nearly ?600 pa, dropping to ?257 pa on re-classifying.

- Reason for rejection - "1. Aseat belt missing or of the wrong type.".

IIRC cars registered after 1988 had to have rear seat belts fitted so if you've got five seats, you need five working belts.

Thanks for advice all! Seems to be a grey area on this car. It has cleary got FOUR seats - two rear headrests, cushions shaped into TWO seats, no split. It doesn't actually state on the logbook how many seats the car has, the field is blank. Anyway, the tester was going to fail it again, just saying "if it had it as standard then it has to have it".. despite me printing out the pages from the MOT test guide and arguing the point. Fortunately I'd already fitted a replacement properly and just hidden it under the seat just to see if I could blag it :-) So it's passed.

Thanks again
