MOT Inspection Variables ..???

Last year had my Mondeo MOT'd and the only thing was an advisory about the wishbone bushes but I didnt replace them .. This year I put it in ,2000 miles later ,and expected something to be said about the wishbones but ( apart from the broked front coil springs) nothing was said ..same garage, same tester... Strange or what .??? Stuart

My Mondeo had an advisory on the steering (a bit of play) 4 MOTs ago - no mention since.

Advisories are done to protect the tester - to show that they noticed a small amount of wear but considered it to be within normal limits. Some testers do it more than others (and especially if they're new to the role).

Frustrating isn't it? Just taken my Metro for its MOT. They failed it on rusty wheel arches, they said it was dangerous to drive as it compromised the rear seat belt & suspension mountings. So took it to a second garage 5 days later, no mention of rusty wheel arches, but it failed it on "excessive play in a rear wheel bearing". I took it home a checked the wheel but couldn't find any play, so left the the wheel trim off & a few greasy finger prints & took it back for retest. No problems at all, I now have my MOT. So my MOT cost me £72 (the first test was no pass no fee offer) plus a lot of wasted time. It really is a lottery

£72...???? So did the second place charge you for the retest .?.Most places dont IME

My previous experience of " excessive wheel bearing play" is that all they need is to be slackened off and torqued up again . Stuart

Depends what type of bearing it is - it could be one similar to a front one on a FWD car, in which case it will probably need replacing - if it's similar to a rear bearing on a FWD car then it's probably adjustable.

If they are taper bearings then yes they can often be adjusted provided they are otherwise ok. Most old Minis have regular ball bearings but I don't know if the metros were updated with taper rollers.

Just because one garage fails an item and another one doesn't that doesn't mean that the second one is right....
