It's dead simple. Fill up when it's "getting low." Here, "getting low" means "it'll be looking down in the dumps later today."
I understand what you mean, though. Sometimes the handbook is wrong though. Our Honda's claimed tank capacity is 65 litres. It also claims that the low fuel light illuminates when there is 9 litres remaining. I've driven 30 miles with that annoying amber warning light and put in... 54 litres. Car returns from 32 to 38 to the gallon.
